Volvo Cars Plans to Build a New Electric Vehicle Factory in Slovakia

Volvo Cars said on July 1 that it will invest 1.2 billion euros ($1.25 billion) in a new dedicated plant for electric vehicles in Kosice in eastern Slovakia to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and obtain future growth potential. It is reported that the new plant is Volvo Cars' third plant in Europe.

Volvo Cars has chosen Slovakia as the new site to complement its Ghent, Belgium plant in Western Europe and Torslanda, Sweden in Northern Europe, to create a European manufacturing triangle covering its largest sales area. Volvo Cars' new plant is scheduled to start construction in 2023, with equipment and production lines installed in 2024, and plans to start mass production of the next-generation Volvo pure electric vehicles in 2026. Volvo Cars' new plant is planned to produce up to 250,000 cars a year and is expected to provide thousands of new job opportunities in the region.

Earlier, Volvo and Buhler officially announced the "hand in hand" cooperation with super-large integrated die casting. Bühler will be Volvo's preferred global supplier to provide a complete set of die-cast units and solutions.

Volvo Cars' Kosice plant will benefit from a well-established local automotive supply chain and become the country's fifth automotive plant. Kosice offers good logistics and transport connections to the rest of Europe, as well as a good supplier base. Incentives provided by the Slovak government were also a key factor in Volvo's decision to locate the plant.

It is worth mentioning that in early July, Volvo’s first pure electric SUV, the all-new pure electric C40, will be officially launched at the Taizhou plant.

As the future factory of electric vehicles, Volvo Cars Taizhou Plant has built a mature pure electric vehicle production system. The plant has successfully put into production three pure electric vehicles in the Volvo Car Group and is an important part of Volvo Cars in global electric vehicle manufacturing. According to official news, the intelligence level of Volvo Cars Taizhou factory has reached 93%, and about 80% of the production capacity is currently used to produce pure electric vehicles. In addition, the plant has achieved 100% electricity carbon neutrality and a clean energy utilization rate of 46%.

It is worth noting that Volvo Cars Taizhou plant has built Volvo Cars' first battery workshop outside of Europe. In addition to supplying the domestic market in China, the power batteries produced by the plant are also exported to global markets such as Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific including China. It is reported that Volvo's new pure electric C40 is produced in Ghent, Belgium and Taizhou, China at the same time. In addition to supplying the Chinese domestic market, the C40 put into production this time will also be exported to Singapore, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and other markets.
